Petition presented to save Petty Harbour Post Office

The following petition was presented today, June 20th, in the House of Commons. Mr. Ryan Cleary (St. John's South—Mount Pearl, NDP): Mr. Speaker, I would like to present a petition on behalf of hundreds of citizens of Petty Harbour--Maddox Cove, as pretty a Newfoundland and Labrador outport as one could find. The petitioners call upon the Government of Canada to reinstate the hours of operation from 24 hours a week to 32 hours a week at the community post office.

Harper Cons aren't prepared to protect NL's Gulf ferry link

I posed this question in the House of Commons today...   Mr. Ryan Cleary (St. John's South—Mount Pearl, NDP): Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister was in Atlantic Canada yesterday, showing again his disrespect for the region. He failed again to make a commitment to the Gulf ferry.     The federal government has an obligation to ensure Newfoundlanders have access to ferry services, but Marine Atlantic will be laying off employees and reducing crossings.     Instead of dodging responsibility, instead of denying their own mismanagement and letting down those who depend on this vital service, Conservatives need to step up and act.     What will the government do to ensure Newfoundland ferry service is protected?      Mr. Jeff Watson (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, CPC): Mr. Speaker, as the member would know, Marine Atlantic is a independent Crown corporation responsible for its operational decisions. That corporation has the responsibility to ensur

Too many people have to choose between a career and a baby

I gave the following one-minute statement in the House of Commons on Wedneday, June 18th. Mr. Speaker, Too many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians … too many Canadians … are thinking of starting a family but are worried about the financial cost. Too many people have to choose between a career and a baby. The support for young families is not where it should be. I held a public forum in my riding of St. John’s South-Mount Pearl last week and the overwhelming message is that – at 55 per cent – parental benefits under the EI system are inadequate. Parental benefits should also fall outside the EI system. New parents are not unemployed or searching for work. New parents deserve fair pay for the hardest job. We speak in this House about Citizenship and Immigration and the Temporary Foreign Worker program as ways to address the labour shortage, but why not make our central focus the family? We must nurture our most precious resource.

Drugs, crime school, and Her Majesty's Pen

I gave the following 10-minute speech on the Drug-Free Prisons Act in the House of Commons on Tuesday, June 17th. Mr. Speaker, I will be splitting my time with the member for the great riding of Sherbrooke. It is not as great as the great riding of St. John's South—Mount Pearl, but it is a close second. I stand in support of Bill C-12, An Act to amend the Corrections and Conditional Release Act, also known as the drug-free prisons act. However, that title is incredibly misleading as the bill before us will not lead to drug-free federal prisons, I am sorry to say. There is not a chance of drug-free prisons without two things: resources and rehabilitation. However, the word “rehabilitation” is not in the Conservative dictionary. It is not in the Conservative budget. It is not in the Conservative mindset. Good luck to the interpreters trying to explain the concept of rehabilitation through the Conservative earpieces. The interpreters will earn their m

Most NLers won’t benefit from income splitting; but then we don’t count to Harper Cons anyway

I gave the following speech on Tuesday, June 10 th , in the House of Commons. Mr. Speaker, I stand in support of this motion by the honourable member for Skeena-Bulkley Valley. That, in the opinion of the House, the drastic increase in income inequality under recent Liberal and Conservative governments harms Canadian society; and that the House express its opposition to the Conservative income-splitting proposal which will make this problem worse and provide no benefit for 86 per cent of Canadians.” I repeat — income splitting is no benefit for 86 per cent of Canadians. That means it IS a benefit to 14 per cent of Canadians. And what 14 per cent of the Canadian population would that be, I ask you Mr. Speaker? Why the wealthiest, Mr. Speaker – the best off, the highest income level. But you probably already knew that, Mr. Speaker, because income splitting is a plan pitched by the Prime Minister and the Conservatives, and that party is all about big business, big mon

No ice compensation - period

Mr. Ryan Cleary (St. John's South—Mount Pearl, NDP) :   Mr. Speaker, hundreds of fishermen have been without income since mid-April because of severe ice conditions, and the government keeps putting them off. The minister told me yesterday that she was misquoted in the media and she is not willing to compensate fishermen and their families. Instead, she is prepared to extend the crab season so fishermen can catch their quotas.   That does nothing to address the lack of income right now. Food has to be put on the table. Bills must be paid.     Cutting to the chase, will the minister agree to clear up the confusion? Will there be ice compensation, yes or no?   Hon. Gail Shea (Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, CPC) :   Mr. Speaker, the confusion is on that side of the House. I regret that ice and weather conditions have affected fishers in some areas of Atlantic Canada, but if conditions remain as predicted, the one remaining closed area will open at 6:00 a.m. to

Shea turns her back on NL; no ice compensation for fishermen

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 4 th , 2014 FEDERAL FISHERIES MINISTER RULES OUT ICE COMPENSATION OTTAWA – New Democrat MP Ryan Cleary (St. John’s South-Mount Pearl) is outraged that the federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans has ruled out ice compensation for fishermen on Newfoundland’s northeast coast. Cleary approached the Minister in the House of Commons today about quotes attributed to her in the local media stating she was open to ice compensation. “The Minister said she was misquoted,” says Cleary. “Gail Shea said she will look at an extension of the crab season so fishermen can catch their quota, but no more than that.” Earle McCurdy, president of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers’ Union has described ice conditions on the northeast coast as an emergency situation, with fishermen unable to get on the water and many having run out of Employment Insurance benefits in mid-April.   “The Minister has turned her back on rural Newfoundland and Labrador,” says Cleary,

All patronage dots point to Peter MacKay

Mr. Ryan Cleary (St. John's South—Mount Pearl, NDP): Mr. Speaker, speaking of wrong, the integrity commissioner ruled that John Lynn, a friend of the justice minister, hired four Conservative staffers at Enterprise Cape Breton without any competitive process. Quote: “One can only conclude that it was motivated by patronage." The question remains, who exactly directed John Lynn to stack the regional development association with patronage appointments? Who? The dots all connect to the Minister of Justice. Will the minister appear before committee to explain his role in this latest in a string of Conservative scandals?   Hon. Rob Moore (Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), CPC): Mr. Speaker, we have already taken action on this file. I already confirmed last week that Mr. Lynn's appointment as CEO of Enterprise Cape Breton was terminated as of May 27, 2014. What I think Canadians are wondering though, in light of today's rev

First annual Ray Guy Day: 'Giggle the bastards to death'

Image
The 1 st annual Ray Day, a celebration of the man and his work, was held Saturday (May 31at) at the Republic bar in downtown St. John’s. The following was my contribution to the readings: Ray Guy wrote a column (A Poke in the Eye) once a month for The Independent newspaper, which ran from 2004 to 2008. And he often made quote of the week. Quote of the week three times in 2005:  (Mel) Gibson belongs to a splinter Roman Catholic sect much given to wearing barbed-wire jockey shorts because it feels so good when you take them off.   It is the flesh and blood of exiled Newfoundland, the bodies and souls who must still face the sad exodus, which must command the thoughts and efforts of any Newfoundland administration. It’s the people, stupid. The Rock never cries.  I detested his (Joey Smallwood’s) intestines when he lived and I’m still not sure he’s dead right now due to the absence of a wooden stake and a burial at the crossroads.
